2024-25 Early Identification

This year (2024-25),

We will:

- Focus on identifying young carers in schools so they can access support earlier

- Get Ofsted to ask about young carers in school inspections

We will do this by:

- Creating a national resource to help school identify young carers. This was launched on Young Carers Action Day 2025 - check it out!

- Responding to Ofsted’s ‘The Big Listen’ survey. (This was completed in May 2024 - A big thanks for all your feedback.😊)

- Writing a letter to HMI Chief Inspector Sir Martyn Oliver calling for young carers to be more prominent in school inspections.

- Getting more media exposure to raise awareness, e.g. radio, TV, social media etc

Ofsted Letter:

In collaboration with Carers Trust, Young Carers National Voice (YCNV) wrote and delivered a letter to HMI Chief Inspector Sir Martyn Oliver on Young Carers Action Day, Wednesday 12th March. The letter highlights the challenges young carers face in school and calls on Ofsted to take action to support them.

📢 Our Calls to Action:

🔹 Recognise young carers – Schools must identify and support young carers as a disadvantaged group, ensuring better attendance, attainment, and wellbeing.

🔹 Hold schools accountable – Ofsted should require schools to report on their support for young carers and include their voices in inspections.

🔹 Improve awareness & training – Ofsted must train staff on young carers’ needs and work with services to set clear support standards.

🔹 Meet with us – We’re asking Sir Martyn Oliver to meet young carers to discuss how Ofsted can help remove barriers to our education.
